In this film Vincent Price plays the Witchfinder General. A man who rides from village to village with his cronies, identifying witches, setting them up for trails, torturing them to prove they are devil worshipers, and then hanging or burning them. It’s never really clear whether the Witchfinder believes these people are witches or not… but it’s made very clear that he enjoys the power of deciding who lives and who dies.

Witchfinder General is different from any other movie that Vincent Price ever made in his career. He was still under contract with the studio AIP and was cast as the lead against the director (Michael Reeves) wishes (He requested Donald Pleasance in the role). This made life on the set very hard as Reeves would not let Vincent put in one of his trademark, gleefully over–the-top performances that I cherish so much. This resulted in the most sadistically evil, low key characters I’ve ever seen Price play. It’s chilling really.

It has everything you would expect in a witch hunt movie, but since the torture\murder scenes are not played up for gore, and because this sort of thing really happened, the pain inflicted in this movie really got under my skin. I did not enjoy watching this movie… I made me incredibly uncomfortable. I can see why some regard it as one one Vincent’s best movies, even Price himself later appreciated the performance the director brought out of him. I highly recommend it.

Sheesh, I love these guys.

I’ve been here… burying myself in sequentials trying to get a webcomic off the ground.  I was aiming for a Halloween 2011 launch but as the date grew closer, and I continued to knock out more and more terrible pages, I realized the comic just was not working the way I wanted it to.  I’ve never really had a project blow up in my face before.  It’s pretty humbling.  I was trying to create a horror comic in a more cartoony art style like my favorite animator Don Bluth and well… I’m just not Don Bluth.  I realized I should have been trying to draw it like Benjamin Hall all along and now I have nothing to show for all my hard work.

So anyway, I’m trying to step back and restructure my game plan.  I still plan to make my next publishing venture a webcomic, even if it’s not the one I just abandoned, so please stick around.

Here is an interesting video interviewing Frank Quitely and Mark Millar about breaking into the comics biz. Their advice is to do some stuff for free first to prove to publishers that you are capable of producing a finished book. It’s a sad truth.

Been pretty busy working on sequentials too, got 20 rough pages for my first project and 5 for a side project. Hope things continue to go this well for me so I can share them soon.

I’ve started work on a few new projects and hope to post about them when they are more concrete. I’m also trying to set some goals for myself. Sequentials are so time consuming that I spend all year working on a book and never create any new illustrations or post new art on my blog. So I’m trying to get myself to post a new piece once a month. They will probably all be part of a theme to make it more fun. I’m giving myself a little head start and most likely won’t start posting the art until June or July, but I am excited about the idea.

Till then, I plan to post about fun stuff I’m interested in, or tripped across, on the Internet. I get tired of talking about me all the time and want to make this blog a little more fun and more frequently updated.

I ended up watching 55 movies in 12 months (not counting revisits… although I did allow revisits that were so old that I couldn’t remember them). It was a fun experiment, but I don’t think I’ll be doing it again.
